Protecting Senior Citizens

There are over 3.5 million Americans over the age of 60 who owe $125 billion dollars in student loan debt, an average of more than $35,000. As many as a third of these seniors are in default of these loans. Some of these seniors have their Social Security checks garnished.

At AFDR. we think this is outrageous. Many seniors can barely live on their Social Security checks as it is, much less with up to 15% taken from them. We call for the full forgiveness of student loan debt for all financially distressed seniors.

Under the Higher Education Act (HEA), President Biden has the authority to forgive these loans. In August 2021, President Biden humanely used his authority under HEA to forgive over $5 billion in student loan for people suffering from permanent and total disability. AFDR calls for President Biden to use his compassion and immediately forgive the student loans of all financially distressed senior citizens.
